Malawi: Rumphi district Police Traffic Office has shared the statistics of the number of the road accidents in the country. The police statistics have confirmed that they have been working hard to sensitize road users in safe driving practices.
However, the management strategy of the district Police Force has not been successful. This is apparent in the fact that about 61 people have been killed in motorcycle accidents in the district since January 2024.
The statistic has left several stakeholders in a state of worry. The members of the community have confirmed that the roads of the district are often deemed unsafe.
The number of road and traffic accidents have been constantly rising in several community, One of the major reasons for the same is that the drivers are either underaged or unlicensed.
The officials of the traffic unit of the district have noticed thee trend of road accidents and believe that it is important for all members of the community to be aware of the situation. The Rumphi Police Station Traffic Officer (STO), John Nyangulu made the remarks in Rumphi.
He was a part of a sensitization exercise in the district where police trained motorcyclists on accident prevention. Nyangulu revealed most of the accidents are caused by unlicensed riders. The other reasons can be that the riders are carrying passengers beyond capacity, speeding and riding while under the influence of alcohol.
“We have trained them to carry passengers according to capacity, avoid over speeding and ensure that their motorcycles are road worth.
We have also advised them to always wear long gloves, helmets and shoes to ensure their safety and passengers.” said Nyangulu. Chairperson for Rumphi Motorcycle Taxis Association, Wellings Chirambo said that the association will establish ways to enforce safety which they have acquired.
Earlier in September, District Commissioner for Rumphi, Emmanuel Bulukutu sounded an SOS asking stakeholders in the district to engage motorcyclists to tame increasing numbers of motorcycle accidents.
Police are expected to conduct the initiative in all major trading centers in the district.
