Dominica: Roosevelt Skerrit, the Prime Minister of Dominica has called for an international system which gives equitable access of resources to Small Island Nations. He made these remarks while attending the MEDays Forum 2024 in Tangier, Morocco
The Prime Minister addressed the international community and extended his gratitude to the nation for hosting the event. The programme has been a part of the annual calendar of Morocco which brings representatives from all over the world for a crucial discussion.
The Kingdom of Morocco and the Amadeus Institute were responsible for organizing the event and giving the international community an opportunity to convene. He started his address with the recollection of the devastation caused by the Hurricane Maria.
He said that the way the nation and people have dealt with the natural disaster and nationwide emergency is proof of their resilience and strong wills. The Prime Minister said that in light of the ever changing world, resilience is a way of survival for the small island.
PM Skerrit said that as the world stands today, the nations should rethink how they define resilience and cooperation. Dominica, under the charge of PM Skerrit, understands that sovereignity needs to be supported by a strong economy,
He said that the small island nations are constantly battling issues, economic shocks, policy changes and more. As such, they have to think ahead and innovate for all situations. He highlighted that for Dominica, the administration has been working towards a path of sustainability.
In his plans for the future of the nation under his leadership, PM Roosevelt Skerrit highlighted that they want to create a robust, diversified economy. They want to ensure that their mandates can meet the needs of the people without compromising on the environment protection.
In the upcoming years, the administration wants to promote self-sufficiency and local resources of the country. He further noted that administration is focussed on agriculture, eco-tourism, and renewable energy.
The Prime Minister has called for a global balance where all the voices are heard and all the nations, whethwe big or small are supported. Dr Skerrit highlighted that small island nations like Dominica have been fighting on the frontlines of Climate Change.
The nations have to constantly work on ensuring that they can rebuild and revive their nations from these disasters. As such, he said the needs of the Small Island States has to become a priority for the international community.
