Zambia: The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, in Zambia is working with the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) to look into the increased number of nature crimes in the region. The country is dedicated to protecting the environment of the country with the support of the organization.
ZEMA will be conducting an assessment on the Kafue River pollution. The organization has confirmed that this pollution was caused by a residue spillage from the tailings storage facilities at Sino Metals Leach Zambia Limited in February this year.
The officials have shared that it is important for the people of the country to remain conscious regarding protection of the environment. The official have shared that they have issued a statement to the media regarding the development.
Minister for Green Economy and Environment Mike Mposha has confirmed that the government is taking the issue seriously as it affects human health, livelihoods, and natural ecosystems.
The Minister Mposha stated that the costs which will be incurred in fulfilling this initiative will be funded from Sino Metals Leach Zambia Limited. He explained that ZEMA will work towards developing the detailed terms of reference to guide the assessment. The organization has shared that they will be working with the district administration and community leaders.
They will talk about the interests and concerns of all relevant Ministries, institutions, and those responsible for agriculture, livestock and fisheries, mines, and water resources management.
The Ministry is dedicated to making sure that the community works together and make environment conscious decisions. The officials have shared that it is important for the leaders to make sure communities
Further, the Minister Mposha has since appealed to members of the public to remain calm asserting that the government is actively working on the issue.
He said that they are committed to making sure that the environment, human lives, and the ecosystems are protected from the effects of pollution caused by the industries in the country.
On 18th February, 2025, the factory owners dumped leach residue from the tailings storage facilities at Sino Metals Leach Zambia in Chambeshi. The dumping negatively affected the Chambishi stream, Kafue and Mwembeshi rivers.
