Dominica: Parliamentary Secretary of Agricultural Ministry – Lakeyia Joseph visited the Calibishie Primary School construction site and monitored the work in progress, last week. She observed the ongoing work of the new facility which is being built for the welfare of Children of the nation.
Renovation of the Calibishie Primary School is funded by the Government of the Republic of China. This project will significantly strengthen the educational infrastructure of Dominica.
Furthermore, it will ensure the safe environment and will provide the modern learning facilities for the students studying in Calibishie Primary School of the nature island.
Schools Reconstruction destroyed by Hurricane Maria
Refurbishment of the Calibishie Primary School is a part of China-Aid Project of Schools Reconstruction. It is a cooperative initiative between the Government of People’s Republic of China and the Government of Dominica.
The project aims to rebuild and modernise the educational infrastructure which was destroyed by the Hurricane Maria, in year 2017. This initiative reflects the deep diplomatic and development ties, running well between Dominica and China. Reconstruction of the school will highlight the commitment of the federation to strengthen the resilience in education sector.
Criteria of Selection for Refurbishment of Schools
China-Aid Project in Dominica was started with an objective of rebuilding and refurbishing several primary and secondary schools across the island. Schools which are under-reconstruction along with the Calibishie Primary School are Newtown Primary School, Goodwill Secondary School and Bellevue Chopin Primary School.
Considerably, these schools were selected based on:
- Severity of hurricane damage
- Student population size
- Strategic importance to their communities
How Redesigned Schools are Different?
The new schools are hurricane resilient and are designed to withstand Category-05 storms. Construction of these buildings incorporates modern classrooms, administrative spaces, science laboratories, libraries, recreational facilities, and many more.
These schools will also have installed solar energy systems to promote sustainability and reduce the operational costs. Facilities such as new furniture, educational equipment and teaching resources will also be provided. Upgraded sanitation, water storage and emergency facilities to improve the disaster preparedness will also be provided.
This China aided construction project majorly focuses on replacing the old structures. The schools will be completely transformed. These will turn educational environments into modern, resilient and sustainable spaces that are conducive and will help in learning and growth.
