Cape Town: The Human Settlements Directorate of the City of Cape Town is pleased to announce the handover of homes to beneficiaries of Phase-5 of the Greenville Housing Project. The city and its partner Garden Cities handed over 26 homes to families, this week.
Phase-5 of the project will benefit 495 beneficiaries and their families once completed. The teams have been working non-stop on the city and its partner, Garden Cities’ innovative Greenville Phase-5 Breaking New Ground (BNG) housing project in Fisantekraal, Durbanville.
Reportedly, the officials are working on R153 million Greenville Housing Development that continues to make steady progress by reflecting the commitment of the City of Cape Town to accelerate housing delivery.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements – Councillor Carl Pophaim said that the Phase-4 of the Greenville Housing Development was completed, last year that delivered over 1000 housing opportunities to qualifying families, as many of whom are among the most vulnerable in the metro.
According to Pophaim, this is one of the most innovative housing projects of the City of Cape Town. It uses Benex Block technology, as an affordable, lightweight building solution that allows for faster and more efficient construction. This approach allows Garden Cities to employ both skilled and unskilled labour from the surrounding communities.
The City of Cape Town is exploring the use of this technology for other suitable housing projects in the future. Further, the city has allocated R54 million towards Phase-5 of the project in the current financial year.
Cllr Carl Pophaim thanked garden Cities for their continued partnership and for assisting the city in delivering an excellent housing development across all phases. As all teams remained hard at work and they are looking forward to creating more housing opportunities for residents at the Greenville Housing Project.
Notably, beneficiaries of the City Housing Projects are selected in accordance with the Housing Allocation Policy of the City of Cape Town and Housing Needs Register to ensure the housing opportunities and are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping.
Those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation. The political office of the City of Cape Town bearers does not have access to or influence over the Register and its qualifying beneficiaries.
