Cape Town: The Urban Mobility Directorate of the City of Cape Town commenced repair works to the pedestrian bridge across the Strand Street, between the Cape Town Station Taxi Deck and the Golden Arrow bus station in the CBD. The work is scheduled for completion by Monday, August 31, 2026 and it is currently being done between 06:00 a.m. and 07:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas stated that the repairs to the Strand Street pedestrian bridge aim to restore the condition of the structural steel pedestrian bridge to a safe working state and will allow for safe pedestrian passage across Strand Street in the medium to long term.
The pedestrian bridge will remain accessible to the public and in use throughout the repair works, just to a lower capacity, until repairs are completed. Quintas added that the repair work is needed to prolong the longevity of the City’s infrastructure and to keep Cape Town moving over roads as well.
Reportedly, the work areas under the bridge will be demarcated to regulate traffic flow through the affected areas, with partial lane closures on:
- Strand Street
- Newmarket Street
- Castle Street
Furthermore, the repair work on the pedestrian bridge over Strand Street may cause congestion, as traffic in both directions could be affected severely. Road users are urged and advised to consider alternative routes while the work is in progress.
Also, motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in the area. They must reduce speed, follow all road signs, stay vigilant near the construction zone and be mindful of the workers.
Notably, commuters should allow extra travel time to avoid delays. Here, the nearby Pedestrian features Strand Street Crossing, which is a vibrant, African daisy-themed crosswalk. It was unveiled recently at the intersection of Strand Street and St. George’s Mall in late 2025. This “tactical urbanism” project aims to slow traffic and improve safety for the 10,000+ people who use it daily.
Second one is the Strand Street Concourse; this underground thoroughfare is originally built in the 1970s. It underwent a major refit to connect the station precinct to the CBD safely and offers protection from weather and vehicle traffic.
Another is, the Strand Street Sky Bridge. It is a separate link that connects the Golden Acre shopping centre to the taxi rank; it often hosts informal traders and has also been noted as a security hotspot for pickpocketing.
