Kenya: Global leaders converged at a high-level forum organised by the French Chamber of Commerce in Nairobi as the maritime sector of Kenya has set the stage for discussions ahead of the ‘Our Ocean Conference’ scheduled to take place in Mombasa.
The forum brought together key industry players from shipping, banking, business community and the blue economy sectors to explore sustainable ocean development. It will be mainly focusing on partnerships, governance and regulatory frameworks that needs to be unlocked for growth in the sector.
French Ambassador to Kenya – Arnaud Suquet graced the forum and called for deeper collaboration between Kenya and France in advancing ocean sustainability. The envoy voiced the need for robust policy frameworks and partnerships to balance economic growth with environmental protection.
Considering this, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) arranged discussions with Manager of Corporate Planning and Strategy – Mohamed Golicha. He took the leading role as a panellist on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer – Capt. William Ruto. During the discussion, Golicha articulated KPA’s efforts to enhance efficiency and expand capacity to meet their growing demand.
He further pointed out key ongoing initiatives that includes expansion of berth infrastructure to accommodate larger vessels, deployment of modern and energy-efficient cargo handling equipment. It also included rollout of digital solutions such as Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) and automated gates to improve operational efficiency.
Manager Golicha noted that Oceans remain central to global trade for nearly 90% of cargo movement. As KPA member they are investing ahead of demand to ensure that the ports remain competitive, efficient and sustainable. The panel discussions held also explored emerging themes by shaping the future sector such as green ports, caron markets, digital connectivity and integrated transport systems by linking ports to rail and road networks.
Furthermore, the stakeholders emphasised need for innovative financing models and stronger institutional coordination to drive blue economy growth while safeguarding marine ecosystems. The forum set the tone for broader engagements expected at the ‘Our Ocean Conference’ which is the first ever to held in Africa.
Panelists during the discussion at the forum included Managing Director CMA CGM East Africa Cluster – Naveen Prabhu; Principal Officer of the African Development Bank – Alfonso Somorin and Executive Director of the French Chamber of Commerce-Kenya – Domitille Guilloton.
