Nigeria: Abdul Samad Rabiu, the second-richest man of Nigeria is funding a housing project for the Nigerian Army through his ASR Africa initiative. The project aims to improve living conditions for junior military personnel, especially for those involved in counter-insurgency operations.
The project is 85% complete and consists of 120 housing units for soldiers ranked corporal and below, with a total cost of about N2 billion ($1.5 million). Nigerian Army leaders praised Rabiu’s commitment and called for more private sector investment in military welfare and infrastructure.
This information was disclosed by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Dr. Ubon Udoh of ASR Africa, who led a delegation to visit Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) – Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, at the Army Headquarters in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.
Dr. Udoh noted that the 120-unit quarters are designated for personnel ranked corporal and below, who are engaged in counter-insurgency operations. He directly assured the military high command and stated that his team is committed to the project completion with quality, transparency and fiscal responsibility.
He communicated the philanthropic vision of the Chairman of the BUA Group – Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu and emphasised that national economic development is dependent on social cohesion and a motivated, well-supported security apparatus.
At the event, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) – Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, advocated for increased private sector investment in military infrastructure, troop welfare and veteran support. He cited that these collaborations as crucial to bolstering national security, improving operational efficacy and quickening national development.
