Cape Town: The Congestion Relief project by the Urban Mobility Directorate of the City of Cape Town at the intersection of De Waal, Kendal and Main Roads in Diep River is progressing well. The project began in July 2026 and is scheduled to conclude in August 2027.
Excavation along the Kendal Road is complete and now the team is preparing the road for the next stage of the construction. Trees have been removed and telecommunication services are being relocated. Along with this, the service ducts and mole barriers were also installed aside the main road.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas stated that the project managers and senior officials together visited the site on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. He said that this project is reducing congestion, improving traffic flow and improving the Southern Suburbs junction to work better for everyone.
If all goes as per the plan, then these road works are anticipated to be completed by August 2027. Considering this, the Urban Mobility team extended their gratitude to the residents and road users for their patience while they continue to work to keep Cape Town moving.
Currently, the De Waal and Kendal Roads function as single carriageways. They link the M3, Main Road (M4) and Prince George Drive (M5) with each other. This long-term plan for the road improvement involves extension of roads to connect with R300.
As per the schedule, the work is being carried out from Mondays to Thursdays between 07:30 a.m. and 05:30 p.m.; on Fridays between 07:30 a.m. and 02:30 p.m. and on Saturdays between 07:30 a.m. and 02:00 p.m.
Quintas further added that they are focusing more on widening the Kendal Road. This will be followed by the widening of Main Road and then the De Waal Road. Once this work gets completed, the Kendal Road will have an additional lane which will include a new bus lane.
According to Cllr Quintas, the main road will also be widened while the De Waal Road will be expanded more to four lanes. The City of Cape Town understands that the upcoming construction work for over the next 12 months may cause some inconvenience for residents and road users. The officials apologise for the disruption and thank the community for its patience and cooperation.
Once completed, the project will improve the traffic flow. Also, it will increase the road capacity and will help in reducing congestion at the busy Southern Suburbs intersection.
