Cape Town: The Green Point Athletic Stadium is under progress of significant upgrades which was recently inspected by the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Growth – Alderman James Vos.
Vos enlightened all that the stadium is a critical component of the Directorate’s Strategic assets portfolio for Economic Growth, that holds substantial economic and social value for the city.
The upgrade work of the Green Point Athletic Stadium underscores the commitment of the City of Cape Town to maintain the high-quality infrastructure that attracts major local and international events. This will also enhance both the local economy and community engagement.
According to Alderman James Vos it is an extensive project to upgrade facilities at the Green Point Athletic Stadium which is about to get completed.
Moreover, the site is managed by the Strategic Assests Department of the City of Cape Town and is the one & only City-owned athletic stadium in the metro that meets Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (SASREA) compliance.
The Green Point Athletic Stadium track was officially opened to the public in 2015 and due to its excellent maintenance, it has been used extensively by the public. It has been a warm-up venue for HSBC Cape Town 7’s Rugby Teams, has also been the start point for the Annual Cape Town Cycle Tour and the Spar Ladies’ Road Race, noted James Vos.
He added that the track is nearing the end of its lifecycle and as a proactive measure, it requires urgent maintenance to ensure sustainable future usage.
The stadium upgradation project was undertaken to enhance the infrastructure and amenities of the track, following a conditional assessment in the year 2022. Then the revisions were done to the design which were further necessitated by changes in the Track Certified Product list by the World Athletics in September 2023.
Alderman Vos added to his statement that these design adjustments were essential in achieving World Athletics Class-2 certification. The result is the installation of a new Polyurethane System.
Once it gets completed, the certification will allow the City of Cape Town to host high-level local, national and international events. He mentioned that through the Strategic Assets Department, they have fulfilled their commitment to ensure that the assets of the City of Cape Town are not just maintained but are improved continuously. However, the ongoing efforts reflect the dedication to maximize the economic and social value of these assets.
