Cape Town: Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Growth and Tourism – Alderman James Vos has identified two top priorities in his advocacy program for the national government. The priority programs for the national government are classified as:
Implementing an Open Skies Policy
Open Skies policy will involve the liberalizing aviation regulations to allow the airlines greater freedom in selecting routes, capacities and pricing. The approach can lead to increased competition, resulting in more flight options and considering the potentially lower fares for consumers.
Additionally, this program can stimulate the economic growth by boosting tourism and trade, as well as fostering innovation within the aviation industry.
Facilitating Private Sector Participation in Port Operations
This is the second priority program, that involves the private sector in port operations that can address the current inefficiencies and will enhance the overall performance. It will also consider the research by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism of Western Cape Government.
It indicates that such engagement could generate an additional R6 billion in exports for over five years that will create approximately 20,000 direct and indirect jobs and will contribute more than R1.6 billion in additional tax revenue.
With these collaborations, City of Cape Town expects to introduce new investments, as well as advanced technologies and effective management practices, thereby increasing the competitiveness of the port and bolstering the economy of the region.
According to Alderman James Vos, by advocating for these initiatives, the mission is to enhance the connectivity and economic vitality of the City of Cape Town by ensuring the sustainable growth and prosperity for the city and its residents.
