Dominica: The ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Dominica – Chu Maoming has reaffirmed the continuous ongoing cooperation between Dominica and China to yield tangible benefits for the citizens.
Recently, a press conference was held where Ambassador Chu highlighted the growing partnership between Dominica and China, and highlighted the significant progress achieved under various bilateral initiatives.
Ambassador Chu mentioned that Dominica joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative in 2014 marking a key milestone in their diplomatic relationship. Last year, in 2024, the two countries celebrated the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties, as a new bilateral cooperation document was signed that set the framework for future collaboration in infrastructure development, education, climate resilience and community welfare.

During the press conference he emphasised the major signature projects such as the construction of the new international airport, post-hurricane reconstruction of schools, and housing development initiatives that stand as vivid examples of how the partnership between Dominica and China directly benefits the citizens. He said that from modern infrastructure to community enhancement, these projects reflected the shared vision of sustainable growth and people-centered development.
He further noted the impact of China’s ‘Small and Beautiful’ initiative in Dominica, through which several community-based projects have been implemented. Maoming remarked that children now can play joyfully in China-aided playgrounds, families have had their roofs repaired, and sanitation facilities have been upgraded with Chinese support.
Climate resilience and disaster prevention have also emerged as vital pillars of the China–Dominica partnership. Ambassador Chu underscored that resilience considerations are now integrated into all major design and construction projects, including the new international airport, schools, and community river defence walls.

He announced the recent completion of the Colihaut River Defence Wall as a critical infrastructure investment aimed at mitigating flood risks and protecting vulnerable communities.
Ambassador Chu highlighted President Xi Jinping’s commitment and stated that China continues to attach great importance to the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States such as Dominica, particularly regarding climate change.
During high-level meetings with President Sylvanie Burton and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, President Xi reaffirmed China’s ongoing support to enhance Dominica’s capabilities in climate action, disaster prevention, and sustainable development strengthening the bond between the two nations for years to come.
