Cape Town: The upgradation work of the Fynbos Dam in Majik Forest will start again soon. The Water and Sanitation Directorate of the City of Cape Town is busy in appointing a new contractor to complete the upgrade at the dam in Bellville’s, Majik Forest. The work will resume in April 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2025.
Reportedly, the Water and Sanitation Directorate of the City of Cape Town is investing about R5.5 million into this upgrade project which clearly aims to assist the water flow from the dam through the spillway.
There’s a lot of scope that the upgradation work includes such as replacing the existing concrete overflow sill with a new apron and concrete sill and constructing new battered training walls.
The construction work will also include a new stepped spillway discharge channel and lining the channel with reno-mattresses and gabions. Gabions can be used to protect the basin from erosion.
Fynbos Dam is located in the Majik Forest Conservation Area and forms a part of stormwater infrastructure assets of Cape Town which is maintained by the Catchment Stormwater and River Management (CSRM) Branch.
Moreover, the dam is inspected routinely for safety which identifies the need for capital works that upgrades to its severely eroded spillway structure. Works that have been already begun was suspended due to contractual disputes in Nov 2024 and caused delays to project completion.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Water and Sanitation – Councillor Zahid Badroodien said that the residents have been very supportive by being patient while the appointment of the new contractor is just being finalised and they want to thank them for that all.
As per Councillor Badroodien, if all goes well according to the plan, then it is anticipated that the work on site will soon resume to restore the safety and integrity of the much-valued infrastructure.
