Botswana is inching closer to the 2024 edition of the national polls on October 30. The elections are one of the most important and most complex initiative for the nation. The Botswana Police Service has been working hard to get the nation ready for the upcoming elections.
Commissioner of Police, Commissioner Dinah Marathe, met with Political Party Representatives at Police Headquarters. The aim of the meeting was to review the effectiveness of the established collaboration platform.
The officials shared that the members of the political parties also met with the Police service for previous interactions. During their meeting, they recalled commitments made in previous engagements with the Police Service.
Commissioner Marathe extended a warm welcome to the representatives of the political parties. She appreciated the political parties for demonstrating a high level of collaboration and stewardship.
The efforts of the country stakeholders will help in ensuring the safety and security of the people. The political party activities will continue safely for the duration of the election season.
The Police Service has assured that the efforts will continue beyond issuing the election writ. She is happy to see continuous engagement between the Botswana Police Service (BPS) and Political Parties.
Commissioner Marathe urged Political Parties to inform their followers to the Electoral Act. The people should also learn about the importance of cooperating with the Police during the elections.
It is important for the people of the country to make sure that the elections are hosted in accordance with the nation’s laws. BPS and Political Party leadership have pledged to work together in peace before and on the Polling Day.
The officials have said all registered citizens will be allowed to exercise their democratic voting rights without any hindrance.
The Botswana Police Service will secure all Electorates, Election Officers, Party Agents, Accredited Election Observer Missions, the General Public. All Election materials within public reach will also be given adequate security on the day of andafter the elections.
Commissioner Marathe said that the BPS will station Police Officers at all Polling Stations and Counting Centres on the day of the elections and after. She said Police Officers have been trained on the Electoral Act and other applicable legislation.
The Commissioner of Polic Botswana Police Service remains apolitical and stands ready to observe human rights and the rule of law before and during elections.
This was the second time that the Political representatives and BPS have hosted a joint meeting ahead of the national elections.
