Botswana: Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) signed a Power Purchase Agreement with 6 citizen owned companies. The aim of the agreement was to develop solar PV power plants across various villages in the country.
The officials have shared some glimpses from the event on their social media. The officials from the Botswana Power Corporation and the citizen owned companies were present at the event.
The officials have shared that they are dedicated to providing support to thee citizen owned organizations. Vice President of the Republic of Botswana, Slumber Tsogwane was also present at the official signing of the argument.
He delivered a brief address at the event and express his delight in the new development.
While giving his keynote address, the Vice President of the Republic of Botswana said that he was happy to be witnessing the signing of 8 power purchase agreements between BPC and 6 citizen owned companies.
He said that the citizen economic empowerment policy creates an enabling environment. According to the leader, this accelerates wealth creation and economic growth through realizing the full potential of citizens.
Further, the Vice President stated that it is a major stride within the citizen economic empowerment efforts.
He said that he is happy to see the Batswana contributing to the development of the energy sector. The Vice President said that this is one of the most critical sectors of Botswana’s economy.
He highlighted that opening of the power sector to private sector participation has seen significant development in power generation with BPC entering into long term power purchase agreements with independent power producers for the supply of energy from solar.
The Mayor of Gaborone Austin Abraham emphasized that the agreement by BPC aligns with Botswana’s National Energy Policy and most importantly the Reset Agenda which reflects the collective ambition to provide an affordable, reliable and adequate energy supply essential for the nation’s sustainable development.
Mayor of Gaborone Abraham further said that by inviting proposals from local citizen-owned bidders, BPC and the Government have prioritized energy access and created opportunities for Batswana’s inclusion and empowerment.
