Botswana: President’s Day holidays road safety situation

Botswana: Botswana Police Service has noted a significant reduction in road traffic accidents, fatalities, serious and minor accidents during the just-ended Holidays.

Three pedestrian deaths resulting from Road Traffic Accidents were recorded during the just-ended President’s Holidays. The accidents occurred at Mogoditshane, Moshupa and Maun respectively. Police preliminary investigations indicate careless driving as the main factor.

During the period under review, 189 road traffic accidents were registered compared to 2017 in 2022, representing a 13% decrease. The number of fatal road accidents also decreased from eight in the previous year to three in the current year. The number of deaths also went down significantly from 11 in the previous year to three. Both fatal accidents and deaths represent 62 5% and 72.7% decrease respectively.

The number of serious injuries decreased from 26 in 2022 to 15 this year, whist minor injuries also went down from 33 in 2022 to 25 2023. The Police registered 6045 traffic violations during the current period compared to 6307-recorded previously. This represented an overall decrease of 11.2 percent.

A total of 410 drivers were subjected to breath-alcohol testing out of which 146 were charged for driving whilst their alcohol content exceeded the prescribed limit. The police would like to commend motorists for their efforts in ensuring road safety across the national road network.
