Cape Town: The prepaid electricity meter update work is complete by 95%. The upgrade work of the electricity meters is considered to be done well as it has been completed before the deadline of December 2024.
Reportedly, all the prepaid metering software in Cape Town has already been updated earlier than other municipalities across South Africa. The city is approaching fast towards the final few meters and thanked the residents for their support and cooperation with this huge task.
The city team is on standby to assist the customers who have not yet updated their meters, as per the requirement.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Energy Councillor – Beverley van Reenen said that all prepaid meters in South Africa must be updated by the end of this year.
Reenen ensured that if meters are not updated, customers won’t be able to recharge their meters with new tokens and will be left without a power supply.
Moreover, the prepaid electricity meters across Cape Town have been updated in approachable phases.
As per the sources, the city is approaching the finish line of its electricity meter software upgrade programme with 95% of prepaid meters which are already updated according to the plan.
Notably, 630,800 meters have been updated and all areas have been reached. City teams will revisit the areas where meters have not been updated yet and mop-up operations are well underway.
The residents are encouraged to help their family members with their updates where possible, particularly the elderly and those with disabilities.
According to the officials, the new meters installed will eventually be updated, but the workers are working through older stock at the moment, and the older stock, even though newly installed, would need to be updated.
The new compliant-ready meters are in the City stock stores now. If the field staff is on site for a meter change or site inspection, some are already updating the meters.
