Cape Town: The MMC for Urban Waste Management – Alderman Grant Twigg addressed the city and said that the team directorate has extended a heartfelt thanks to all residents who participated in the 2024 City of Cape Town Household Survey. The valuable input helps them in keeping the track in progress to improve the waste services and guides future planning to ensure every household enjoys a cleaner and healthier community.
Reportedly, the result of the survey shows that over 84% of households across Cape Town reported of receiving regular refuse collection. In formal areas, over 97% of households reported that they benefitted from weekly services, while more work is needed to improve services in informal settlements, despite of the challenging operating conditions, including hijackings and attacks on the frontline staff.
However, these findings align with the commitment as outlined in the Waste Strategy 2025, to prioritise the improvements in waste collection for informal settlements, backyard dwellings, and small-scale rental units. The strategy recognises that these fast-growing communities face unique challenges, including density and limited infrastructure, and commits to practical solutions that bring dignity, health, and cleaner communities for all residents.
Alderman Grant Twigg further stated that they have improved waste collection in informal settlements which are at the heart of the Waste Strategy. Every load of waste collected represents a cleaner street, a healthier community, and a step toward a city where everyone can live with dignity. They thanked residents for their cooperation and for helping them in understanding where they can do more.
Notably, the Waste Strategy outlines clear actions to strengthen existing services. By expanding community-based collection initiatives, and reducing illegal dumping, particularly in vulnerable areas they are bringing a great change.
Receiving a continuous resident feedback and partnership, the Urban Waste Management team aims to ensure that every community becomes part of a cleaner and more inclusive Cape Town.
