Cape Town: The Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Spokesperson – Charlotte Powell has provided an update related to work and addressed the impacts of various informal residential fires that occurred on April 04, 2024, at 02:30 p.m. over the long weekend on the occasion of Easter.
Reportedly, the residents were affected in Langa, in Cape Town and have begun rebuilding their structures after the fire debris was cleared by the Solid Waste Department of the city.
The electricity infrastructure also got damaged as the repair work for the recently received damage was still in process and will take some time to complete.
Spokesperson Powell has also reported about the Doornbach and Mfuleni where more structures were destroyed and works were continued to assist the respective communities.
As explained by Charlotte Powell, the community hall in Mfuleni was vacated as people either rebuilt their structures or stayed with their families.
Various such organisations continue to get involved with providing meals. These organisations include SASSA and Gift of the Givers, which are collaborating with Shoprite and conveyed to the local councillor.
Moreover, Cape Town has also received donations and offers of assistance from companies that considered Pick n Pay, the Angels Network, The Warehouse, and the Strategic Fuel Fund.
The Disaster and Risk Management has currently coordinated with the donations for the distribution to the people who are affected by the fires.
Previously, the spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Services team, Jermaine Carelse, also gave the fire update for March 30, 2024, which occurred at 11:00 a.m.
According to the report by the spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, the fire started below the slopes of Devil’s Peak last night and was extinguished just after midnight.
Surprisingly, no damage of any property was reported. The cause of the fire is not known yet. Combined efforts were shown by the city firefighters and crews from the TMNP (Table Mountain National Park) and VWS (Volunteer Wildfire Services).
