Cape Town: The Water and Sanitation Directorate of the City of Cape Town has successfully renewed sewer pipelines in Century City that ensures safer and more reliable sanitation services for residents and businesses. This project is a part of the Mayoral Priority Programme (MPP) of the city, which has earmarked R589.5 million for maintenance and pipe replacements across the Cape Town in the 2025-26 financial year and ensured the long-term reliability of the sewer network.
Reportedly, the Century City project has saw the rehabilitation of almost 2000 meters of sewer pipeline that started in July 2025 and was completed at the end of October 2025. It focused on renewing the sewer pipelines along the several key streets, including:
- Century Avenue,
- Century Boulevard,
- Edison Way, and
- Boundary Road
The renewal works were prioritised as the 25-year-old sewer pipes experienced the collapses along Century Boulevard by requiring emergency repairs; Corrosion between Mercantile and Bridge roads; and Failing sewers at the sporting courts that resulted in open excavations on Century Avenue and that would have disrupted the traffic.
Renewal of these critical sewer pipelines were first carried out via six open-trench emergency repairs to address the immediate issues, that are followed by a renewal method known as cured-in-place pipe (CIPP). The work was carried out in two phases:
- Phase-1: included Century Boulevard, next to Canal Walk Shopping Centre
- Phase-2: included Century Avenue, near the Porsche dealership off Bosmansdam Road
CIPP involves inserting a specially designed liner into the existing pipe, which is then cured in place to form a new and durable inner pipe. This ‘pipe within a pipe’ method restores the sewer to near-new condition and extends its useful life.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Water and Sanitation – Councillor Zahid Badroodien said that with area’s growing population and activity, this sewer renewal was essential to ensure sewage which is carried safely and reliably for years to come. The team thanked the residents, businesses and visitors for their patience during this important work.
Its benefits include, extending the life of the sewer infrastructure for decades; providing a smooth, jointless inner surface by reducing leaks and blockages. It will also minimise the environmental impact with only small access points.
Reducing soil disturbance, protecting gardens, trees and structures are also one of its advantages. Along with this, it will also enable quicker pipe renewal by limiting disruption to residents and traffic.
