Cape Town Film Office calls for filmmakers to begin ‘Film Support Fund’

The film fund aims to select the projects that will support the emerging film and media talent base through the upskilling and training initiatives that are based in Cape Town.

City of Cape Town is calling all filmmakers. The official Film Office invited all to apply for the support of their project. The deadline for the submission of fundings and municipal services for the production is October 20, 2024.

Reportedly, the Film Office is accepting the submissions for productions, that is to be completed in the 2024-25 financial year.

The Film Support Fund is established recently, with an aim to finance or provide the support in the form of municipal services for film projects produced in Cape Town. However, the funds will cover the short films, feature films, music videos, commercials and Reality TV series, among others.

It is looking to support the productions which will drive local economic development, create opportunities through the broader film and media production’s value chain.

Additionally, the film fund aims to select the projects that will support the emerging film and media talent base through the upskilling and training initiatives that are based in Cape Town.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that with tis film fund, the City wants to ensure that they provide further support to an industry which already created over 30,000 jobs and contributes to attracting the direct investment into Cape Town.

Alderman Smith said, “We believe the film fund has the potential to assist the local film industry to not only reduce the burden of production costs but also to help the sector to improve its ability to attract the international work currently going to other film territories overseas.”

“We would like to encourage the members of the local television, media and film sectors to make use of the resources that enables them to focus on the creative and storytelling,” expressed JP Smith.

The Film Office of City of Cape Town is seeking projects that align with the criteria such as Projects that stimulate local economic growth and create jobs within the city.

The criteria also include the Film and Media projects that highlight and promote the unique aspects of Cape Town. These initiatives support and upskill the merging talent in the film and media sector within the Cape Town.

It also includes the programmes that drive sustainability, diversity and inclusion within the local film and media landscape. These are the projects that authentically portrays the rich history and cultural heritage of the Cape Town.

Moreover, the Film and Media projects are included with the capacity to attract the direct investment into the City of Cape Town.
