Cape Town celebrated 13th annual Bonsai Festival in the Company’s Garden under the 2025 theme ‘Bonsai and Art in the Park’. The festival brought together the residents and visitors for a vibrant celebration of creativity culture and horticultural.
Reportedly, this year’s festival was a collaborative effort, made possible by the Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town along with the Community, Arts and Culture Development (CACD) Department – which manages the ArtsAweh! and Emerging Artists Programme in association with the Cape Regional Association of Bonsai (CRAB).
In collaboration, the departments created a platform where art, nature and community intersect.
The vibrant festival featured a showcase of works by local emerging artists alongside the ArtsAweh! exhibition, and visitors got the unique opportunity to experience art in a natural setting which added fresh perspectives that complemented the bonsai displays and workshops.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that the Bonsai Festival celebrates community, creativity and the love of art and nature, drawing residents and visitors into the parks and green spaces to connect with the environment and each other.
Higham enlightened all that it is an ancient art, and she hope that they inspire the new generation of tree lovers and bonsai enthusiasts, with this initiative.
The Bonsai Festival was a unique opportunity through which the nature lovers and visitors connected with both the environment and the community. The event not only showcased local talent and artistic expression but also encouraged environmental awareness and a deeper appreciation of the natural spaces that enrich the city.
Bonsai Festival 2025 was observed on Oct 18 and 19 at Company’s Garden in Cape Town where the visitors discovered the beauty and serenity of miniature trees.
At the premier annual celebration of the Japanese art of Bonsai, hosted by the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department in partnership with the Western Cape Bonsai Community, the festival brought together bonsai enthusiasts, horticulturalists, and families for a weekend of artistry, learning and community.
The visitors at the event explored the intricate techniques of bonsai, gained tips on growing trees in city spaces, and connected with a passionate community of bonsai lovers.
Arranged in the historic Company’s Garden, the festival featured stunning art and bonsai displays with an interactive zen garden, and a range of educational activities including an ikebana demonstration as well as free expert talks on bonsai cultivation, tree care, and sustainable urban gardening.
