Cape Town: Homes under the Gugulethu Infill Housing Project by the City of Cape Town were handed over on Friday, March 01, 2024. The Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes were granted by the Councillor Carl Pophaim, who is the Member of the Mayoral Committee of Human Settlements and other officials in the directorate.
Carl Pophaim and the officials visited the project site to celebrate with qualifying beneficiaries and to check the progress of the project.
Recently, the project is back on track after experiencing several challenges and stretches over two sites i.e. Erf 8448 in Gugulethu and Mau Mau in Nyanga.

The City of Cape Town has taken over the project and is progressing towards the completion of the project rapidly.
Councillor Pophaim said he is thrilled to be in Gugulethu at the Erf 8448 site to celebrate with the project’s new homeowners.
He added that the subsidised housing project was subject to not only contract the challenges but many complexities and delays that include the Covid-19 national lockdown, extortion attempts, the unlawful occupation of partially completed units at the Mau Mau site and vandalism to complete the work.
Councillor Pophaim has honoured the project teams, contractors and most importantly to the beneficiaries.

Reportedly, the Gugulethu Infill housing project will deliver 1,004 homes to the qualified beneficiaries and their families. These get distributed into 570 units at the Gugulethu site and 434 at Mau Mau place.
As per the sources, 131 units have been completed successfully at the Mau Mau site, which was handed over despite the infill project’s myriad complexities.
Pophaim mentioned that the City will continue to do all it can to provide opportunities to those most need it.

“Our teams remain dedicated to completing the Gugulethu Infill housing project for the beneficiaries and their families,” said the Councillor.
He added that the work on site is progressing well and will be completed as soon as possible. He thanked the communities, City teams and project steering committees for their hard work and dedication to take this project forward and move the rightful beneficiaries into their new homes.
