Cape Town: The Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town, in association with Ward-81 Councillor – Ashley Potts hosted the first-ever youth volleyball tournament at Parkhurst Primary School in Mitchells Plain on Friday, June 20, 2025.
The event was a part of the Youth Month celebrations of the City of Cape Town which aimed at promoting access to new recreational opportunities for young people. The Volleyball Tournament followed a series of coaching clinics that began in April 2025 to train children between the ages of 08 and 16. Work is under-way to get more primary schools to sign-up for the coming months.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that by investing in both infrastructure and programming they are opening doors for young people to discover new talents, stay active and connect with their communities in meaningful ways. It is wonderful to know that family and friends supported and inspired young players.
Although volleyball is often seen as a summer sport and it can be played year-round, both indoors and outdoors. However, in winter with full swing, the Recreation and Parks team is exploring opportunities to host the programme at indoor venues going forward to ensure continuity through the colder months.
Councillor Ashley Potts said that this Youth Volleyball Tournament highlights the importance of creating safe, inclusive spaces where young people can grow in confidence, build friendships and stay active throughout the year.
The event was originally scheduled to held on the new outdoor volleyball court at Westridge Swimming Pool and prevailed weather conditions on the day called for a Plan B. With the support of principal Stephan Visser and his team, the tournament continued in the courtyard of Parkhurst Primary School once the weather conditions improved.
As per the sources, Western Province volleyball players were present and delivered an exciting exhibition match to inspire the young participants and demonstrated key techniques including how to deliver a serve.
The City of Cape Town remained committed to expand the access to inclusive and engaging recreational programmes, by helping youth across Cape Town grow through participating in recreation and sport, no matter what the season.
