Cape Town: City alerts residents to stay in the safe zone this summer season. For which, the City of Cape Town has launched ‘Safe Zone’ drowning prevention campaign. This will help the children as the school holidays are officially approaching. It is one of the several initiatives that particularly ensures the public safety and water safety.
The Safe Zone campaign encapsulates the four golden rules of drowning prevention, that needs to be kept in mind while visiting the beaches, they are:
- Swim only between the lifeguards’ red and yellow flags at beaches
- Do not bring alcohol to the beach and do not drink and swim
- Be alert to the dangers of rip currents
- Actively supervise children at all times, especially around water
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that they need to actively supervise the children. This is something that needs to be top of mind at all times and is a priority not just at the beaches.
Higham added that with the school holidays arriving soon, they want to alert the parents and make them cautious to put their children’s safety first. They need to ensure their children that they are always in the care of a responsible adult.
She said that the City of Cape Town has numerous ‘Safe Zone’ for children this summer that includes a host of recreational facilities and libraries with facilitated programmes to keep them engaged in meaningful ways. The child safety is a shared responsibility that always know their whereabouts, as what they are wearing, who their friends are and where they live.
Designated swimming beaches and City swimming pools are specially manned by lifeguards daily between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Make sure your child knows that they need to follow these instructions properly. The kids should be aware that they need to stay in the shallow end of the pool or surf if they are not strong swimmers.
Note that children under the age of seven needs to be accompanied by an adult everytime, when visiting the City Swimming Pools.
Furthermore, the Identikidz programme is also launching at 15 of the busiest beaches of the City of Cape Town from Dec 15, 2025 as a child safety measure.
