The City of Cape Town has invested in Hope Budget 2025-26 prioritizes improving the water quality of the vleis, strengthening the resilience of the coastline against the impact of climate change and rising sea levels and upgrades to the nature reserves that offer a welcome escape and educational opportunities to communities across the city.
Cape Town is into curbing the spread of the invasive Polyphagous Shothole Borer Beetle, that is a priority, as it was spent on urban regeneration projects in vulnerable communities and the central districts were neglected. It finalized the key precinct development plans to stimulate economic growth.
The draft budget by the City of Cape Town released for the new financial year, beginning from July 01, 2025 was tabled at the Council meeting on March 27, 2025 and is available for public comment until May 01, 2025.
Hope Budget considers the implications of climate change, population growth, along with in-migration, as well as surge in informality, and also the escalating need for indigent support and financial sustainability of Cape Town budgets.
Deputy Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee for Spatial Planning and Environment – Alderman Eddie Andrews said that the Spatial Planning and Environment Directorate of the City of Cape Town is responsible for a coastline covering 307km to preserve the unique and world-renowned biodiversity.
Among these 21 nature reserves and wetlands are in focus, which are sustainably managed as the special rating areas and those areas in need of urban regeneration are finally ready to assess the development and building plan applications. While it will also realize the spatial goals as determined by the Integrated Development Plan and Municipal Spatial Development Framework of the City of Cape Town.
Eddie Andrews also added that the Economic growth, socio-economic challenges and spatial transformation are the key priorities. The proposed budget demonstrates the commitment to deliver on all of them.
Alderman Andrews said further that they have encouraged the residents to peruse the draft budget and submit comments. The public money can be spent in the interest of the communities as they are building the City of Hope. The professional and dedicated officials will manage the implementation of the projects together with residents at ongoing support and collaboration, as part of which is participation in the budget process of the City of Cape Town.
