Cape Town: Opera has entered to the city neighbourhoods. Residents across Cape Town will soon have the chance to experience the magic of live opera. Right in their own communities. The Arts and Culture Branch of the City of Cape Town partners with the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble to present a series of free neighbourhood concerts next week.
City’s Arts and Culture Branch, within the Community, Services and Health Directorate, along with the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble, presents the Opera in Your Neighbourhood programme. A world-class vocal performance that moves beyond traditional theatre spaces and into familiar community venues, creating accessible and memorable cultural experiences for residents of all ages.
In the past, these community concerts have brought immense joy and inspiration to audiences across the city, resonating with people of all ages. Given this positive reception, the initiative is being expanded to enable broader access to Cape Town’s cultural life.
The Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble consists of 18 members and a chorus master. It will present three concerts next week, offering audiences the chance to experience the power of live opera right on their doorstep.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that the Opera is a uniquely powerful art form that combines music, drama, visual art and dance. It is often viewed as inaccessible, but through Opera in Your Neighbourhood the team is bringing the opera to communities.
The City of Cape Town is proud to support this initiative as it gives residents an opportunity to attend a concert and be immersed in this rich cultural art form. The concerts are open to residents of all ages, and are free of charge. The event will take place at the following venues:
- Langa Civic Centre: February 26 at 12:00 O’clock noon
- Bothasig Community Hall: February 27 at 06:00 p.m.
- Fish Hoek Community Hall: February 28 at 12:00 O’clock noon
Considering this, Chorus Master – Antoinette Huyssen said that the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble presents free community concerts in Langa, Bothasig and Fish Hoek in City of Cape Town venues. These concerts serve to make opera and classical singing accessible to people who would not usually have easy access to the theatre.
Audiences have always responded with much enthusiasm and heartfelt comments as they are given the opportunity to see opera singers up close and personal and in their own neighbourhood. The Vocal Ensemble is looking forward to engage with new and diverse audiences with their energetic and beautiful musical programme. The repertoire is diverse and includes opera, classical, musical theatre, African traditional, and gospel music.
