Cape Town: The City will launch a pilot cashless payment method at its Customer Interaction Centre and Motor Vehicle Registration and Licensing (MVRL) offices at Table Bay Mall and Durbanville from Wednesday, July 01, 2026. This initiative is a part of the pilot project, in which customers visiting the centres will no longer be able to make payments using cash. Instead, all payments and transactions at the offices will be processed through bank card payments.
This pilot project marks an important step in the City’s ongoing efforts to modernise customer services and create a safer and more efficient service environment for both residents and staff. The City of Cape Town aims to streamline transactions, improve security measures and support the growing adoption of digital payment options by reducing the handling of cash at municipal facilities.
Reportedly, the Table Bay Mall and Durbanville facilities have been identified as the first sites to test the new operating model based on a review of the number of cash transactions over the past year. Insights gained during the pilot phase will help in informing future implementation plans and ensuring that customer needs remain at the centre of any changes to service delivery processes.
This way the customers engage with services that will continue to evolve and municipalities must adapt accordingly. The project will allow the City to assess how a fully cashless environment functions in practice while maintaining a high standard of customer service. These findings will guide their approach as they explore opportunities to extend the model to additional facilities in future.
City of Cape Town further intends to evaluate the pilot project over the coming months before introducing cashless operations at other centres and municipal offices through a phased implementation programme. Also, the Customers are encouraged to prepare for the change by ensuring that they have access to suitable payment methods when visiting the Table Bay Mall Office and the Durbanville Municipal Office from July 01, 2026.
