Cape Town: The City of Cape Town team is all set to assist customers with the update related to prepaid electricity meters.
As per the sources, all prepaid software for the meters in South Africa must be updated, or customers won’t be able to recharge their meters with new tokens and will be left without a power supply.
In the major areas of Cape Town, prepaid electricity meters have already been updated in a scheduled phased approach.
Eligible customers will also observe that they are due for the update when they make a purchase and see the update codes.
Reportedly, city teams are now on standby to assist those customers who did not update the meters during the phased rollout, if required.
At present, Cape Town is in the final stretch of its electricity meter software upgrade programme, with 95% of prepaid meters already updated according to plan.
In Cape Town, approximately 619,000 meters are already updated, and officials have reached almost all areas.
The city will revisit areas where meters have not yet been updated and clear the operations that are planned for early 2024.
The Member of the City’s Mayoral Committee for Energy – Councillor Beverley van Reenen, said that the residents are urged to help their family members with their updates where particularly elderly family members may be considered, especially those with disabilities.
He mentioned that residents might contact the City’s call centre for assistance. While purchasing the prepaid meters, customers will receive two 20-digit update codes along with their usual prepaid token.
Notably, when their area is scheduled for the update, customers need to follow the following easy steps to enter the update codes:
- Customers have to enter the first twenty-digit code and wait for it to get accepted.
- Then, they have to enter the second twenty-digit update code and get it accepted.
- At last, they need to enter the usual twenty-digit token to recharge units as normal.
