Cape Town: The Underground Electricity Cabling Project of worth R6 million by the City of Cape Town in Sea Point is nearing completion and is one of the city interventions to combat crises level electricity infrastructure vandalism across the metro.
The City of Cape Town overhead the electricity conductors approx. 2000 metres will be removed and replaced with the underground cabling in the area. City is pleased to announce that the project will be completed by the end of May 2025, if all goes according to plan.
The project began in 2024 where the participated teams removed 22 electricity poles and electricity cabling in five roads in the area. Over the next three months, the teams will be completing the project in the remaining four roads.
Moreover, these teams are committed to complete the Sea Point underground cabling project in a timely manner considering the minimum disruption to customers. The programme is the being rolled out in eight other areas in North, including Woodstock and Oranjezicht.
The teams are also carrying out underground cabling projects across the metro and these projects represent the city investments into the future, which will deliver numerous benefits to residents and businesses.
In the previous Financial Year 2023-24, the City completed major overhead to underground infrastructure projects in areas including – Bonteheuwel, Kewtown, Kensington, Pinelands and Woodstock.
As one of the vandalism and theft deterrents of the City of Cape Town, utilises aluminium cabling for streetlights and for its Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV) networks due to the lower resale value of material compared to copper.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Energy – Alderman Xanthea Limberg said that the transition of the city to underground electricity cabling and infrastructure is a key component to the long-term vision to modernise and enhance the reliability of the infrastructure and network.
