The City of Cape Town is wrapping up Manenberg Road Rehabilitation project. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Rob Quintas visited Manenberg to assess the major road rehabilitation project, which started in May and is now nearing completion. He was accompanied by project manager Taabish Samaai.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas said that he would like to thank Manenberg residents and road users for their patience and cooperation over the past eight months.
This project prioritised the rehabilitation of ageing concrete roads and the improvement of pedestrian facilities to ensure safer, more accessible neighbourhood streets. The original concrete surfaces have been replaced with long-lasting asphalt, and the sidewalks and verges have been upgraded to fully surfaced standards.
Reportedly, over 1.3 kilometres of road repairs were completed along multiple routes, including parts of Olifants Road, Nahoon Street, Vygekraal Road, Ohio Avenue, Thames Avenue and Marico Street.
Councillor Rob Quintas said that they have also implemented speed humps and other traffic-calming measures to help reduce speeding, along with universal access upgrades at intersections to improve safety for wheelchair users and vulnerable pedestrians.
Importantly, the project also supported local employment, with 14 EPWP workers contributing to the work on the ground, added Councillor Quintas.
According to him, the rehabilitation of roads in Manenberg is expected to be completed in early December this year. This signifed another milestone in strengthening mobility and safety in Manenberg while affirming the commitment of the City of Cape Town to keep Cape Town ever moving.
The Manenberg Road Rehabilitation project is an ongoing initiative by the City of Cape Town that is part of a larger investment in the area. In August 2024, it was reported that R14 million in road rehabilitation would be done in Manenberg and Heideveld.
The specific roads to be rehabilitated were discussed in a Subcouncil meeting in April 2024, where a request was made for an official to confirm the identified roads.
