Cape Town: Victoria & Alfred Waterfront serves up the Squash Championship. The Growthpoint South Africa National Squash Championships is being observed at the V&A Waterfront.
Reportedly, some of the country’s top players are competing to be crowned as 2024 champion. Alexandra Fuller and Mighael Lombard from Cape Town are also competing among 16 men and women squash players, who are contending for the National Squash Championships at the V&A Waterfront’s centre court this weekend.
Fuller is a two-time Growthpoint SA National Squash champion who played to add to her previous success in 2020 and 2022 in her quest for the third title.
As per the sources, Fuller being a member of the Rondebosch-based WPCC Squash Club, has represented Western Province 10 times at the senior level and has represented South Africa at the World Juniors, World University Games and the Women’s World Team Champions.
Participating in the squash championship, Fuller said that the Growthpoint SA Nationals is a huge tournament and it is a big honour to play in it and to win it. “I’m really enjoying playing in these tournaments and competing again, so I’m excited about this next opportunity,” said Alexandra Fuller.
Club mates of Fuller, such as Lombard has been playing squash since the age of 11 and has been representing Western Province since the year 2015.
Expressing himself, Lombard said that he really enjoyed the intense competition and problem-solving that they have to do by themselves. He added, “On the occasion where you happen to play well, it feels like you are expressing yourself creatively.”
The City of Cape Town remained partner of the Growthpoint SA Squash National Championships since the year 2021.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that Cape Town has been home to the championships for the last four years and the tournament has been a wonderful showcase of the squash talent in the country.
Alderman Smith highlighted that City of Cape Town is proud to be a part of platform that provides opportunities to these athletes to display their abilities on a national stage. “We would like to encourage residents and visitors to head to the centre court to enjoy high-level squash action and support the players,” said JP Smith.
Growthpoint SA Nationals of Squash
The championship has begun on August 09, 2024 and will conclude on August 18, 2024. The matches are being conducted at the V&A Waterfront Centre Court from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Entry for the event is completely free, and no ticket is required.
The Growthpoint SA Nationals of Squash is one of South Africa’s most exciting squash events, which is being hosted at the V&A Waterfront inside an all-glass squash court at the centre court.
Notably, the event brings together the country’s best players for an action-packed tournament. The event is held every year, to showcase the top-notch squash as players compete for the national titles in U-15, U-17, U-19 and open men and women categories. With intense matches and a lively atmosphere, it is a must-watch for squash fans.
