Zambia (Chilanga): Chilanga Police Station reported a case of murder on the day of New Year (January 1, 2024). The case was registered by M/Malama Chifwembe, whose younger brother was shot dead by Eric Mwambembe in Lusaka.
As per the reports, this occurred on January 1 at night around 9:30 at the reporter’s house in Long Ridge, Chilanga.
Reports also indicated that they were attending a New Year Party where Chifwembe invited the deceased as well as the suspect. Then, at around 21:00, they started firing fireworks in the air, and the suspect got his gun pistol and started firing in the air in unclear circumstances; he shot at the deceased, and immediately he saw that he had shot a person; he got into his vehicle and drove away and later handed over himself and the gun without ammunition to Embassy Police Post under Chawama Police Station.
The relatives of the deceased took him to the Chilanga Clinic, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Then, the hospital called the police and told them about the incident.
After that, police rushed to the clinic and inspected the body, which was found with a bullet wound on the right side of the face. The suspect, Eric Mwambembe, aged 35, of Chilanga Kachenjela area, was later transferred to Chilanga Police and detained in custody, and his firearm without ammunition was retained as an exhibit.
The scene was visited, where officers picked up Seven empty cartridges and later preserved them for further management today. Police Investigations are ongoing.
Residents and family of the victim are still in shock. Residents are giving their opinion that people should avoid purchasing guns and all stuff as it is dangerous to themselves only, especially when they don’t know where to use them.
“This is quite unfortunate. That’s why I wouldn’t purchase a firearm. And we were warned to celebrate and enjoy responsibly. We now have one life lost and one man going to prison for carelessness,” said the user.
