Zambia: A 28-year-old woman of Mufulira pleaded guilty to causing the death of her one-month-old baby in a drunken stupor. Notably, the culprit, Christine Musonda confessed that she accidentally placed her elbow on the nose of her baby while in a drunken state.
She has been sentenced to two years of simple imprisonment for her self-reported crime. The culprit was identified as Christine Musonda. She was facing a charge of manslaughter. She pleaded guilty to unlawfully causing the death of her son, Steven Wanda, in April last year.
According to a statement from the culprit, She left her home around 18:00 hours to go and drink kachasu. She returned home around 20:00 hours and went to sleep in her bedroom.
“The accused was sleeping with her son, Steven Wanda, who was one month old. Sometime later during the night, the other children heard the baby cry. At this point, the children went to check on him but were chased by the mother,” the statement reads.
“A few minutes later, the mother was found sleeping and her elbow was on the child’s nose.”
Nearly an ear later, Ndola High Court Judge Winnie Mwenda delivered the judgement. At the time, she noted that throughout the case, Musonda was in tears. The judge believes that the tears were a sign that she was remorseful for her actions.
“I therefore sentence her to two years simple imprisonment effective from the date of arrest,” Judge Mwenda said.
The people of the country hoped that the mother would serve her sentence and reunite with her children and family. The mother was devastated by the loss of her child and has accepted her role in causing the death.
She will be serving her sentence for the crime The people of Zambia expressed their disappointment on the situation. Meanwhile, the family has not been available for comment on the situation.
