Cape Town: The distribution of home composting containers helps in diverting organic waste from landfill. The City of Cape Town is actively continuing its distribution of home composting containers to residents of single residential properties.
Reportedly, these containers bolster the efforts of the City of Cape Town to reduce the amount of food and organic waste that reaches landfills. 300 containers were handed out recently during a Mayor’s Service Blitz event in the Kensington and Maitland communities.
The recipients received a hands-on demonstration on how to use their composting container, along with instructional materials to guide them through the composting process.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Waste Management – Alderman Grant Twigg said that composting is a key part of the strategy to reduce organic waste sent to landfill.
It is simple to do and produces nutrient-rich fertilizer that can help grow lush gardens or support local food growers who feed the communities. When food waste decomposes in landfills, it produces gases that contribute significantly more to global warming than composting does. Climate change threatens them all so, it’s in everyone’s interest to compost.
Since 2016, the City of Cape Town has distributed more than 50,000 free home composting bins, who is helping to foster a strong composting culture. The demand remained high, as it reflects growing enthusiasm among Capetonians to turn organic waste into valuable compost.
Notably, the rollout will continue at the next Mayor’s Service Blitz in Sub-council 11 on July 15, 2025. The Service Blitz event also welcomed the anti-litter mascot ‘Bingo’. It made awareness regarding cleanliness and hygienic environment.
There they distributed composting bins in order to keep the surroundings safe and clean. The distributors were officially appointed by the City of Cape Town to make the bins available to everyone, and ensured that no litter or garbage is spread on the roads or nearby surroundings.
