Cape Town: The Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town together with seniors from Mitchells Plain celebrated the flourishing success of the Westridge Rose Garden at their first rose show on November 11, 2024. The event highlighted the remarkable contributions of community members who participated in the ‘mini-pruning workshop’.
In the workshop, the visitors gained hands-on skills to care for the roses that are now blooming in vibrant displays throughout the garden.
Considerably, the Rose Show gathered the local residents and city officials to celebrate the results of the September workshop, which taught participants the key techniques for rose care, from summer pruning to proper watering and fertilizing.
Horticultural team of the City of Cape Town also shared the practical skills that have directly contributed to the breath-taking blooms of the garden. This reflects the dedication of both the seniors and the garden staff.
Notably, each attendee at the workshop also took home a rose cutting and nurtured their newfound passion for gardening in their own spaces.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that the Westridge Rose Garden is a shining example of how the community can come together to cultivate beauty and pride in the public spaces.
Ross added that the dedication of the seniors is inspiring and to see the garden flourish under their care is a testament to the efforts, they have invested in.
Ward Councillor – Ashley Potts said that the garden is a cherished space for Westridge residents and saw its thriving testament to the hard work and love put in by both the residents and the horticultural team of the city.
Potts further said that it is wonderful to see the seniors leading the way in creating a beautiful, welcoming environment that encouraged a lasting passion for gardening within the community.
Horticulture Head for the area – Zandiswa Qoma said that the roses are a symbol of what can be achieved, when they work together to nurture and preserve the green spaces.
According to Qoma, it is a privilege to see the results of the hard work of the seniors. “We look forward to continue the efforts in keeping the garden in bloom for all to enjoy.
However, the Recreation and Parks Department invites all residents to visit the Westridge Rose Garden this season and experience the stunning display of roses first-hand. The beloved recreational facility offers a family-friendly setting for picnics, consisting of leisurely walks and photo opportunities amid the season’s blooms.
