Cape Town: The refurbishment work of two City athletics tracks gets off the ground. The Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town marked the beginning of the renovation at the Wesfleur Athletics Track in Atlantis and the Blue Downs Athletics Track with a site visit.
Reportedly, the total investment in the reinstatement of athletics tracks at both of these facilities is approx. R60 million. The site visits were attended by the councilors and representatives from the athletics community.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that the athletics facilities in the city are well used and are crucial for promoting physical activity. Currently, they are encouraging team spirit and nurturing talented athletes.
Higham further added that as a city official, they are committed to provide facilities that promote all of these values. By investing in the facilities, as they are also investing in future champions.

This recently conducted refurbishment work marks the first phase of restoring the Wesfleur and Blue Downs Athletics Track to full operational readiness, with subsequent phases that are still being planned.
Ward Councillor of Ward-29 and Sub-Council 1 Chairperson – Councillor Allister Lightburn highlighted that the refurbishment work of the Wesfeur track is a significant step for the local community. This will further provide young athletes in the area with the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to the future of sport in Atlantis.
Lightburn added that he is looking forward to seeing the positive impact that will have on their athletes.

Moreover, the upgradations will include resurfacing of the track, by replacing the top layer and improving key features, such as the hammer throw cage, take-off boards and steeplechase area.
Considering this, Cairman of the Velocity Athletic Club – Mario Philander said that they deeply appreciate the Wesfleur track refurbishment. He extended his gratitude to the City of Cape Town’s attention to the concerns. The Velocity Athletic Club and the wider athletic community of Atlantis will now benefit from a fantastic track refurbishment.
