Cape Town: The City of Cape Town called on residents and interested parties to comment on the proposal to upgrade and construct non-motorised transport (NMT) infrastructure in Wesbank, Blackheath and Blue Downs. The closing date for comments is Friday, Mar 07, 2025.
Reportedly, the project has a great scope as it will upgrade and maintain NMT facilities in Wesbank, Blackheath and Blue Downs, ensuring the facilities that are universally accessible. It will upgrade and install the dropped kerbs and tactile ground surface indicators for the visually impaired people.
The NMT infrastructure project will upgrade the pedestrian crossings by shortening the crossing distances and improving signage and road markings. It will also introduce the protected cycle lanes where applicable.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility of City of Cape Town – Councillor Rob Quintas said that the proposed upgrades to the Non-Motorised Transport facilities in Wesbank, Blackheath and Blue Downs have been carefully planned by the Urban Mobility team to suit the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and individuals with disabilities.
Quintas and his team identified the need for this infrastructure in the communities and want to improve road safety for the residents. They called on the public to please review the proposals, as the input is always valuable and the project team makes the final decisions pertaining to the project.
The affected roads by the NMT project will include Hindle Road between Wesbank Main Road and Eersriv Way. Bentley Crescent between Eersriv Way and Silversands Avenue, Eersriv Way between Eersriv Way and the police station entrance.
It also includes Bardale Road between Hindle Road and Silversands Avenue, Silversands Main Road between Wesbank Main Road and Wesbank sports grounds, Wesbank Main Road between Hindle Road and Stellenbosch Road, Vogevlei Main Road between Wesbank Main Road and Silversands Main Road, Waterblom Main Street between Silversands Main Road and Wesbank Main Road also Albert Philander Way between Eersriv Way and Raymond Ackerman Avenue.
