Cape Town: The Youth conquered Maclear’s Beacon in 2024 Hiking Challenge Finale. The Recreation and Parks Department for City of Cape Town announced the successful conclusion of the Maclear’s Beacon Hiking Challenge 2024, that took place on Saturday, October 26, 2024.
Reportedly, 55 young participants from across the city which is supported by 14 marshals and 17 Disaster Risk Management volunteers. It completed the final hike to the summit of Maclear’s Beacon, which is the highest point on Table Mountain.
The hiking challenge is a part of the Outdoor Adventure Programme of the Department. The mentors trained the participants over several Saturdays. This activity challenged the participants and encouraged the youth to explore nature, build confidence and develop a deeper appreciation of the natural environment for Cape Town.
The final hike was a challenging test of physical endurance. The participants then tackled one of the most intense routes on Table Mountain. They engaged in teamwork and environmental education.
Throughout their training, the participants learned essential hiking rules, practiced teamwork and engaged in educational activities that tested their knowledge of nature.
During the hike, the participated teams competed through a points system that rewarded then for keeping their snack pack litter, picking up litter along the route and correctly answering the nature-based questions.
Membe of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that this hiking challenge goes beyond the physical feat of climbing Table Mountain.
rAccording to Ross, it is about fostering love for the outdoors, encouraging teamwork and teaching the youth regarding the importance of taking care of the environment.
“We are immensely proud of all the participants and their dedication. We celebrate their incredible achievements” said the Councillor Van der Ross.
As per the sources, a prize ceremony was followed after the hike and celebrated the achievements of these determined young hikers.
Maclear’s Beacon Hiking Challenge has been a vital initiative in promoting outdoor recreation, environmental responsibility and personal development among the youth of Cape Town.
