Cape Town: The Recreation and Parks Department is working in the midst of a multi-year project that will inject an estimated R28 million into upgrading the Bishop Lavis Sports Ground.
The project aims to enhance the recreational access and encourage an active lifestyle by establishing a central hub for the Bishop Lavis Community, in Cape Town. The concept for the design, for the upgraded facility focuses mainly on increasing its functionality and appeal to various user groups.
Many improvemnets have been made as of now. The completed work includes an upgraded cricket pitch, a regrassed athletics track, new multipurpose hard courts for tennis and netball and new spectator fencing.
The renovation work is further enhanced to essential infrastructure additions that includes stormwater catchpits. Additionally, the works also included the central green core, created by consolidating soccer and cricket fields, that further enhanced the facility’s accessibility and versatility.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that the Bishop Lavis Sports Ground is a beautiful facility and they are glad to see the improvements that were made so far.
Ross added that the community-focused on the investment that underscored the commitment to provide safe, accessible and quality recreational facilities.
Furthermore, the state-of-the-art upgrades create an inviting environment for families and athletes and will promote the community well-being and pride.
The planned upgradation works for the 2024 will include improvements to the entrance, access road and parking areas as well as the creation of an 11-a-side synthetic soccer pitch and a family park.
Notably, these developments will attract a diverse range of users and will provide a family-friendly amenities. The add on in the plan featured a pedestrian link that connects Lavistown train station to Bishop Lavis Town Centre as outlined in the Bishop Lavis Urban Node Upgrade Public Investment Framework (PIF).
Considering this, Ward Councillor – Charles Esau said that these improvements will significantly enhance the safety, accessibility and functionality that makes the facility a welcoming space for local residents to get together and participate in sports and enjoy the outdoors.
