Commonwealth Youth Council selects Joshua Opey of Ghana as Chairperson

The candidates will serve from the time period of two years, from 2024 to 2026 and will lead the inclusive consultations, projects and events to voice young concerns of young people and shape youth development policies.

Africa: Representatives of Ghana, Kenya and Namibia has acquired the important position in the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC). The Commonwealth Youth Council represents more than 1.2 billion young people in the Commonwealth.

Joshua Opey from Ghana has been elected as a Chairperson, Neema Sheikh Abdikadir from Kenya has been elected as Vice Chairperson, Inclusion and Engagement and Rosy Schaneck from Namibia has been selected as the representative of Africa.

Other than Africa there are elected Vice Chairperson and Representatives from distinctive countries such as India, Jamaica, Canada and Samoa, in the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC).

Reportedly, the election process for CYC concluded on September 18, 2024 with keen participation from youth delegates across the 56 Commonwealth member countries.

The Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) electoral board has released the provisional results of the 2024 executive elections in which 48 candidates competed in a keenly contested race, for ten seats on the council.

As per the sources, 2024 elections were held due to special significance as the Commonwealth Youth Council celebrates ten years of advancing the youth development agenda and steps up youth participation at all levels of decision-making.

The candidates will serve from the time period of two years, from 2024 to 2026 and will lead the inclusive consultations, projects and events to voice young concerns of young people and shape youth development policies.

Considerably, the candidates will be officially installed at a special ceremony during the Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF) 2024 at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa in October.

The Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) is the official representative voice of over 1.5 billion young people in Commonwealth as 60% of them are under the age of 30.

Notably, CYC was first established in the year 2013 with the support of the Commonwealth Secretariat of Commonwealth Youth Programme. The Commonwealth Heads of Government endorsed the CYC as an autonomous, youth-led organisation at the CHOGM summit in Sri Lanka.
