South Africa: The Buffalo City Metro is breathing new life into the Eyabantwana Day Care Centre in Mdantsane as part of its Mandela Day program.
Earlier this week, the Metro visited the Centre and found disturbing scenes with the structure having cracks, leaking ceilings, an overgrown yard, litter and dumpsites around and with the Centre also lacking basic equipment and toys.
BCM Deputy Executive Mayor Councillor Princess Faku is leading various stakeholders in painting, cleaning, clearing, and roof and ceiling refurbishing at the Centre as part of the Mandela Day commemoration.
Stakeholders involved include the Provincial Dept of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DESRAC) and Transnet Phelophepa Train.
The Centre has been donated with three sand pits, ten scooters and various other toys.
DESRAC has commissioned at least five artists to paint child-friendly graphics at the Centre.
I’m between the cleaning; Councillor Faku also took a moment and interacted with the kids at the Centre, giving them toys and reading stories to them.
“There is no better way to honour the former state President than making children happy,” said Councillor Faku.
“Tata Madiba has taught us that there is no greater gift than to give your time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return.”
“We are assisting this day care to make sure that we brighten the future of its children. What is important is that a school like this must be safe, and bright and should serve as a happy place to stimulate the imagination of children,” Councillor Faku added.
