Cape Town celebrates the return of Navy Festival. The Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews attended the Right to Entry Parade in Simon’s Town, held on October 05, 2024. He observed this alongside the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans – Angie Motshekga.
Andrews delivered a speech at the event that gave him pleasure to stand before all, after what feels like a long hiatus to mark the return of the Navy Festival to the beautiful city, Cape Town.
It has been several years since they have had this unique event and it is wonderful that it is returning back in all its glory.
Reportedly, the festival is more than just a celebration of the nation’s Navy. It is an opportunity for the community to reconnect with the vital role the Navy plays in protecting and increasing the prosperity of the nation.
The Navy is often seen as a silent protector, which remains out of sight for many. It quietly safeguards the shores, protects the maritime trade routes and ensures the freedom of the seas.

Deputy Mayor included a quote by Nelson Mandela that he once said, “The Navy is the maritime shield of the Nation and the guardian of our seas.”
He said that it is a powerful reminder from Tata Madiba that underscores the crucial role of the Navy, who defend the shores and protect the broader interests of the country.
According to the Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews, in the increasing globalised world, the Navy is ensuring the participation in the international maritime affairs, which is protecting the vital trade routes that sustain the economy of the nation and also around the globe.
He added that the oceans are the lifelines and the security is critical for all the nations. It is a reminder that while they speak to the land borders the maritime boundaries are just as significant.
Furthermore, the event also highlights the symbiotic relationship between the Navy and the broader Cape Town community. The Navy provides an invaluable employment opportunity for the surrounding communities that offers jobs and careers filled with purpose and service to the nation.
Andrews highlighted that the impact of this extended beyond the military services, that stimulates the local economy, creates skills development opportunities and fosters a sense of pride in the youth.
