Zambia: An elephant attack has resulted in the violent death of a 46 years old man identified as Ernest Ndembela of Makelele village of Shangombo District. The attack happened in the afternoon hours of Friday while the victim was away from the village.
The victim of the animal attack, who has died of his injuries, had left his house to cut grass outside the village when the animal attacked. The Makelele community has been affected by several animal attacks and feel extremely safe.
Mukumbuta Mukumbuta, who is the brother to the deceased, spoke to the media regarding the incident. He informed the media that elephants have been terrorising their villages for a long time. The animals are destroying homes and eating their food.
Afterwards, Mukumbuta informed the media that on Friday, his brother was killed while he was cutting grass. He also said that the animal attacks are dangerous and can claim more lives if the situation is not brought under check.
He said that they are being troubled by these animals for several months. He mourned the loss of his elder brother who died in the animal attack on Saturday. He said that he was going to visit the village of his in laws on Saturday and cut grass.
He highlighted that he had visited the in laws house and started his work when he was attacked. He managed to escape the animal for the first time and stayed in his in laws house for a short duration.
After some time he thought the elephants had gone and he went back to pick the grass. At this time, the elephant attacked him and claimed his life. He said that the incident was further reported to the police.
Mubita Siyamana Shangombo District Commissioner has confirmed that his office received a report of this incident. After they received the reports, the officers spoke to the National Parks and Wildlife officers who responded swiftly.
