Cape Town: The Enforcement Department of City of Cape Town confiscated 4,730 bottles of liquor from transgressors at beaches, parks and other public places since Dec 01, 2024. Visitors to public facilities are reminded that it is illegal to consume alcohol in public.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that the officers are out in full force to ensure the safety of everyone and this makes sure that public places are safe. The official team checked the car trunks, coolers and some unlikely hiding places.
The visitors are finding more and more ingenious ways to hide their liquor. However, the officers won’t be bamboozled. The Safety and Security team has also seen alcohol injected into the fruit like watermelon and oranges which were hidden inside baby bottles and other liquid containers.
Reportedly, some people have put their drinks inside the municipal waste bins, the green ones which are normally placed alongside a pole, and then cover it with sand to keep it cool. Some of them have also brought their liquor in flasks and even blow on it enthusiastically to cool down their fake tea or coffee.
According to JP Smith, intoxication is a risk to public safety as they all have already seen fights on beaches and are putting their own life and their loved ones at risk. When they left the beach people have to get into a vehicle and drive home. It is a serious danger to everyone in the vehicle and other road users.
The Cape Town officers will confiscate the alcohol and perpetrators will be fined. People requested to enjoy the fun in the sun without alcohol and when they get home, they can toast an incident free day.
Furthermore, the traffic officers recovered two stolen vehicles on the roads and confiscated another one which was used in a crime, in three separate incidents in the Muizenberg area. In total six people were arrested.
As per the last incident happened on Dec 28, 2024, officers followed up on information of a stolen vehicles travelling on Main Road towards Muizenberg and with the assistance of the Law Enforcement auxiliary team that stopped the vehicle and arrested the four occupants.
Investigation of the vehicles led to the discovery of three bottles of champagne worth approx. R3,000 in an electronic cooler box with multiple chargers and a Bluetooth speaker. Four suspects will be charged with being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle as well as being in possession of stolen property.
Also, the traffic officers recorded 47,008 offences that impounded 148 public transport vehicles and executed 505 warrants of arrest.
