South Africa: Female athletes from Free State recently participated at the World Championship of Majorette-Sport & Merry Majorette International Cup in France. The team of young athletes was accompanied by their coaches Helene Bakkes and Duane Erasmus.
The Federation of Dance, Drill, Cheerleading and Majorette Sport South Africa team scooped gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. The South African Central Senior team consisted of the following members:
- Mariska Nortje
- Thato Monyetsane
- Onalerona Loate
- Kay-Leigh Liddle
- Naledi Sethunya
- Kananelo Mashaya
- Lineo Pikelela.
Coach Bakkes said she was proud of the girls and called on potential financiers to assist those in need.
“It is very costly to participate in such competitions and unfortunately for some of the girls, their parents simply could not afford it. That is why we are making an appeal to those with funds to assist. Lack of finances should not keep the children away from playing sport,” said Coach Bakkes.
The camaraderie between coaches Bakkes and Erasmus also played a significant role in their trophy haul. “We have known each other for 12 years and we share a special bond. We are very supportive of each other and that is why we have done so well,” she said.
Monyetsane, Sethunya, Mashaya and Pikelela from Navalsig High School approached the Office of the Premier and showcased their talent. After this, the team were given the chance to participate in the tournament.
“It was a wonderful experience to take part in the tournament. Unfortunately, we did not have sponsors and the costs, including travelling and accommodation, were just too steep.
Our parents would have certainly found it difficult to pay for us. One day, we decided to approach the Office of the Premier and explained our predicament. We were told not to worry and that we would be assisted. Days later, officials from the Office of the Premier spoke to our parents and our tickets and accommodation were paid for. We are thankful to the Free State Provincial Government for their generosity,” said Sethunya.
