Botswana: Gaborone City Council (GCC) and Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The aim of the partnership and the MoU was to come together for the development of smart farming, green city and urban farming.

The signing of the Mmorandum of understanding was hosted in Gaborone City on Friday with several stakeholders from the city council in attendance. The glimpses from the event were shared  by the city council officials on their social media.

The officials shared that the Mayor of Gaborone, Austin Abraham was also present at the signing of the MoU.

BUAN Vice Chancellor Professor Ketlhatlogile Mosepele reflected on the importance of signing the MoU. He said, the aim is to contribute to the development of Gaborone in such a way that it is resilient, sustainable and prosperous.

Professor Mosepele highlighted that the signing will build a bridge of cooperation between the city council and the university. This will in turn facilitate knowledge and resources between the two entities.

He said the collaboration provides a platform for GCC to leverage on BUAN’s expertise to build a Sustainable City. At the same time,  it will also contribute towards creating a City of the Future.

Mayor Austin Abraham said BUAN is a critical stakeholder with Gaborone City Council. He said the partnership between the two will confidently lead to many new joint initiatives.

These initiatives will produce new synergies and add academic and sustainable value for both institutions in the years to come.

City Mayor stated the collaboration can fully harness opportunities in renewable energies and landscape management. He added that the MoU will also allow for projects such as the agrivoltaic project to contribute to the City’s electricity grid.

The Mayor also highlighted that collaborating in smart farming and urban farming presents an opportunity for the organizations to come up with solutions for new farming technologies to the City and its proxies. All these issues will reflect on Prsident Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi’s Reset Agenda.

Deputy Town Clerk-Development Chidzani Mudongo assured the Mayor and Vice Chancellor that a Joint Technical Committee (JTC) and sub-committees to facilitate close collaboration between BUAN and GCC will be established.

He added that JTC will be responsible for ensuring appropriate arrangements are in place to agree, review, monitor and report on the Parties’ commitments in this MoU.
