Gaborone City Council celebrates council mom on Mothers Day

Botswana: Gaborone City Council came together to celebrate Mothers Day 2024 on Friday. The annual event celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year aims to honor the mothers of the community.

The 2024 edition of the celebration was hosted under the theme “Celebrating Motherhood: A timeless bond.” Through the event, the Gaborone City Council sought to recognize the mothers of the council for their dedication, hardwork and sacrifices

The event was a testament of the Council’s appreciation and recognition of the hard work, dedication and sacrifices made by mother’s within the organization.

Permanent Secretary to the President Emmah Peloetletse delivered a brief address at the event. She said that it is imperative to celebrate the incredible roles that mothers play in the lives of their children.

The mothers act as a provider and shield for their children and work hard for the betterment of their families. The Permanent Secretary highlighted the challenges faced by working mothers.

She noted that the mothers have to work to meet the needs of their families. However, they still have to make time to bond with the children. She claimed that this ability of the mothers has to be appreciated.

Peloetletse also highlighted the strength of the mothers as they sometimes experience hardships in their families. These hardships may have been a result of Gender Based Violence that they face. However, they still make great efforts to be a pillar of strength for their children.

Deputy Court President (Urban Customary Court) Kgosi Segametsi Pule said that a mother is responsible for a lot of roles in the upbringing of their children. She should therefore be celebrated for her significant role and responsibility.

Kgosi Pule celebrated all the mothers who were gathered at the event as well as all the mothers around the world. SHE Coordinator for Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Idah Molefhi also came forward to celebrate the mothers of the community.

She said  that being a mother in itself is a full time job due to the gender roles, sexual and reproductive health. Therefore balancing motherhood and work coupled with other life events can be more than a handful.

She also emphasized that mother’s day is the perfect time to support the wellbeing of working mothers.

Deputy Town Clerk (Operations) Mosidi Batsalelwang conciuded the event with a small speech. She thanked everyone who made the event a success as well as all the mothers employed by Gaborone City Council.

She also emphasized the importance of roles that mothers play within the organization as mothers are known to be mutli taskers and display that in their work as well.

The event was also graced by testimonies from mothers on their motherhood journey. Some of the testimonies were delivered by Kgomotso Gagosi, Refilwe Ben, Thandie Malebang and Joyce Ogopotse.
