Botswana: The Gaborone City Council (GCC) held a Mayor’s Walk event in order to raise funds for Ambrose Trust. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Standard Chartered Bank of Botswana.
The initiative was meant to be taken for a charitable purpose. According to the officials of the GCC, the 10km walk will also raise funds for Local Authority Health Institutions Sport Association (LAHISA) team Gaborone.
The team is all set to which will participate in Namibia for the annual sporting activities. The event sponsored by the Mayor of Gaborone will be instrumental to the success of the team in the annual sporting activities.
The funds raised during the Mayor’s Walk will help the team get access to better facilites, leading to better preparation. The theme for the walk was “Lets walk together for a healthier and stronger Gaborone”.
The Mayor of Gaborone City Austin Abraham stated that the purpose of the event was to bring physical exercise back to the community. At the same time, the officials as well as encourage the public to exercise on daily basis.
He said the walk was mandated to assist in the fight against non-communicable diseases. This was done by encouraging awareness of such issues through activities such as aerobics, walk through testing and screening.
GCC Town Clerk, Lopang Pule said it is vital for people to prioritize their personal wellbeing. He stated that maintaining physical health by eating well and increasing movement will have a positive impact in one’s wellbeing. He emphasized that an event such as this walk allows participants to do some exercises for this good purpose.
Standard Chartered Bank’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand & Marketing Ms. Bame Moremong described the event as the start of a valuable relationship between the two entities. She appreciated the gesture done by the Mayor and City Council in ensuring that there is so much interest in physical and mental health.
She encouraged the public to adhere to a healthy lifestyle. She said that it is more valuable above anything else. She also highlighted that the bank will continue to encourage any activity which is in line with uplifting the public and encouraging good health practices.
