Botswana: Environmental Health Department of Gaborone City hosted the inaugural prize giving ceremony for School Health Competitions 2024. The aim of the awards ceremony is to honor students and schools who have participated in the Competition.

Gaborone City Council has been working hard to educate the people of Botswana about waste management in the country. The officials of the city council have participated in many activities to promote waste management.

The competition for schools across the city was hosted under the theme, “Joining Hands for a Cleaner Gaborone”. The authorities claimed that prize giving ceremony sought to encourage and motivate students to help promote sustainable environment.

Town Clerk Lopang Pule said that public education and awareness plays a major role in promoting sustainable environment. He made these remarks at the inaugural awards event for the schools and students of Gaborone.

Pule stressed that the City Council is concerned about issues of waste management around the City. Accordingly, they are hosting schools competitions to motivate children to practise proper waste handling.

According to the town clerk, the competitions aim to ensure that schools and students contributes to promoting a cleaner and greener environment. He said Gaborone City must have good aesthetics to complement the status of being a capital city.

The authorities of Gaborone City Council have taken up beautification and vegetation planning in different parts of the city to ensure that the city present a clean and pleasant environment

Urban Customary Court President Kgosi Oageng Mosole said a clean environment should be prioritised. He claimed that it is an important prerequisite for a healthy living.

Kgosi Mosole applauded the City Council for taking the initiative to introduce proper waste management at school level. He added more effort must be put into making sure that every Motswana is equally knowledgeable about waste management.

The awards event was hosted by several important members of the Gaborone City Council. Another important member associated with the waste management mission was Re-Waste Chief Sustainability Officer Ketsile Mogae.

She said community participation for cleaner Gaborone encourages continued participation in promoting clean environment. Mogae further noted that there is a need for environmental specialists at global level.

These experts can help in advocating for long term solution on sustainable environment. Further the City leadership was applauded for leading by example into ensuring proper upkeep of Gaborone City.

She commended City Council for using students’ creativity in relation to waste and its proper management practises.
